Chariots on Fire

30 teams battled it out last week at Sandown Racecourse for the winners laurels to prove that they were, without doubt, the champion charioteers of this FTSE 100 petrochemical company.

The challenge fitted well with their conference theme and mirrored many of the challenges that this huge project team faces on a daily basis.

This imaginative challenge sees teams building a life-sized Roman chariot from huge sheets of cardboard while working from blueprints with demanding specifications. Simultaneously, smaller groups operate on various allied tasks before the vehicle is finally assembled. As with any large-scale build, operational success means co-ordinated team effort, effective communication and a big dose of lateral thinking and creativity.

Teams then put their personal stamp on their chariots customising them with dazzling designs and colours or they can choose to make a statement with their corporate logos, strap-lines and colours.

Fast and frenetic throughout the build session, the atmosphere built as the 3 heats produced the 6 finalists and the final race for the championship was full of energy and incident! With suitable charioteer’s breast plates and headgear they looked straight out of the Ben Hur film set!
